How To Release Stress & Tension In The Face
"It’s been shown that over time stress and tension can freeze the muscles on your face.
When our facial muscles become tight, we tend to be stuck even deeper in these emotional states."
Did you know that stress and tension can get stuck in your face?
Our face shows everything, from our happy emotions to our sad emotions. But one part of the face that is recently being discovered is how stress, and stressful emotions can literally paralyse muscles on our face. After time, these emotions start being worn on the face and can actually change the way our face looks & operates.
Whether we want to or not, our face expresses these emotions. Our nervous system plays a big part in this body symphony, by hardwiring the mimetic muscles (#facenerd talk for facial muscles) in certain patterns to convey a wide range of emotions - such as happiness, sadness, surprise and fear - as a means for our faces to communicate how we feel.
Through time, and with our subconscious patterning, and how we develop our personalities, the repetition of these emotions starts to play out on our face. Chronic tension and stress, starts to build up on our facial muscles, which can show up as face stuck in a constant frown expression or a lopsided mouth due to ongoing sadness.
I experienced this myself when living through an extremely stressful year of my life, my eyes were becoming lopsided, one eye frozen in a downward position and my cheeks swollen due to stress. The ongoing expression of stress was literally being lived out on my face!
It’s been shown that smiling can reduce stress, and being forced to furrow their brows makes people feel sadness, anger, and disgust. So when our facial muscles become tight and keep us stuck in certain expressions over time from these emotions, we’ll tend to be stuck even deeper in that emotional state.
This is where I find Face Yoga to be a savior. As it works in a dual-action, simultaneous working to teach stressed muscles to operate in a more fluid & relaxed fashion, and thus teaching our nervous system and sensitive selves to be more at peace. When we feel like there is nothing left and life has gotten the better of us, Face Yoga can be the one exercise practice to help us make deep changes from within. Reconnecting us with our face, the one we have always known, no matter what the adversity or challenge it is facing.
