Let’s Talk About Face Volume and How It Affects Your Face

When I talk about face volume, what do I mean?

Let's look at the background to see what parts make up the volume metric of the face…

The volume of the face is visual on the surface, but it is a matter of support, strength, and health in various tissues, starting at a bone level with the strength and support of the skull bones of the face. For the soft tissue to have structural support, healthy and strong bones at a deep level are vital.

You may have heard about how the skull changes with age, which is also true to some extent, but as we know from other body parts, the body prioritizes the strength of bones that are stimulated through pressure and weight. This knowledge is utilized in the Face Core Method and through the workouts of the LIPID collection.

We stimulate the natural remodelling cycle by resistance training the facial muscles, deep tissue massage, and adding pressure to the facial bones, which are often particularly susceptible to bone density loss.

That's just one way to understand how to keep that part of our face balanced and strong.

On top of the bones, we have various soft tissues.

We have the facial muscles, which we use for expression, and then we have more functional muscles.

We have many fat pads, and small fat compartments on the face. These add volume and features to the face and allow the facial muscles to have small gliding pads or pockets between them.

We have surface structures like the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system), the subcutaneous layer, which is a fatty surface layer, and then we have the deep skin layer (dermis) and the surface skin layer (epidermis).

This entire system of soft tissue on the face allows us to make very precise and detailed movements for communication and supports our senses. So, we are quite a fascinating species, and we get a lot of information about each other from the face. This is why it can feel imperative for us to look healthy, strong, joyful, and vibrant.

When looking at the soft tissue, the most important for volume are the deep and superficial fat pads, the muscle tissue, and the subcutaneous layer.

It's worth noting that adipose tissue is quite sensitive and that fat cells can vary significantly in volume. The fat cell (adipocyte) can hypertrophy, which means it is swelling and increasing in size. We can also see fat atrophy, which means the fat cell is decreasing in size and that the fat compartment will be withering away.

What is typical in the deeper fat pads (or compartments) as we age is that the fat cells will atrophy because of a lack of circulation and nourishment in the deep structure of the face, closest to the bones. This means volume loss in certain areas of the face where these fat pads play the largest part in the overall volume composition of the face.

In the more superficial structure, in the superficial fat pads, we typically see an increase in volume, which then plays out on the surface as volume increases in areas such as swelling over the nasolabial fold, at the jowl area, under the chin sometimes as bags under the eyes and changes to the cheekbone area, such as pronounced malar bags, tear through etc.

These are all part of the changes that come over time as the soft tissue changes and to reverse or mitigate these changes, we have to be curious about all the ways that the soft tissue is changing over time, and develop techniques to reverse these changes and keep the overall health, strength, and vitality of the soft tissue intact.

This is what led me to develop the LIPID pillar as part of the Face Core Method

In the LIPID masterclass, you will get a more in-depth introduction to the changes that are occurring at all the volume metrics of the face.

In this masterclass, you will learn:

  • The Face Core Method 5 Pillars

  • How they work on the face, the importance, and why

  • How the volume metric will change over time and how to keep it healthy through life.

  • How nourishing your facial fat will keep the volume of lips, cheeks, under eyes, and other areas of the face.

  • No need for facial fillers once you know these techniques
